With or without the approval of the Houston family, the Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown Biopic, tentatively titled, “I Have Nothing,’ is currently in production. Angela Bassett is making her directorial debut in this Lifetime movie, starring America’s Next Top Model runner-up YaYa DaCosta.
This week, Entertainment Tonight scored an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the set. They also spoke with Angela, who is handling the criticism well.
“With great opportunity there will be criticism, but what you don’t need is to go out looking for naysayers. You have a job to do.”
The movie will be about Whitney’s tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown, who is being played by newbie actor, Arlen Escarpeta.
While Bobby Brown has yet to comment on the biopic being made about his life, his daughter Bobbi Kristina has spoke out forcefully against it. She wanted to play the role of her mother and she is also not happy with Angela Bassett as the director. She tweeted:
Angela responded by saying that she understands how Bobbi Kristina feels, because she recently lost her own mother and she loves Bobbi Kristina.
As far as how she feels about YaYa, she tweeted…
Ouch! To add insult to injury, Lifetime will not be using Whitney’s voice in the movie. They have enlisted talented R&B singer, Deborah Cox to sing Whitney’s part.
Their reasoning remains that the movie is more about her life and her live performances, than her recordings, but let’s be honest….They probably didn’t get the rights to use her voice. Obviously, Whitney Houston was all about the voice, so as talented as Deborah may be….she is no Whitney.
Outside of her memoir, highly-publicized Oprah interview and the antics of estranged-granddaughter Bobbi Kristina, Cissy Houston has remained out of the spotlight since the death of her daughter Whitney Houston…until now.
Thanks to Lifetime (and director Angela Bassett), Cissy has been forced to speak out on behalf of the Houston estate, and they are not pleased that yet again, Whitney’s life is being dissected by “continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her.” In an exclusive to ET, Cissy spoke against the upcoming biopic saying,
“Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family’s objections. No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby,” she said in a statement to ET. “In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest.”
Well….please watch the clip below and tell me if you think YaYa has mastered Miss Houston? ‘I Have Nothing,’ is expected to premiere on Lifetime in 2015!
