Are you tired of the unrealistic and over-glamourized shows on television, probably written by men, that portray women to be something we’re not? If so, this show is for you! GIRLS is one of the most raw and honest comedies of our generation. The show’s star and creator, Lena Dunham decided to create her own opportunity in Hollywood. You know CNikky loves it when you aren’t afraid to create your own destiny! She wanted to tell the story of what it’s really like to try and find yourself when you are in your 20’s. Their characters include a hippy free-spirit, a high strung virgin who wants to be cool, a “perfect” pretty selfish snob, and an ambitious writer who is afraid of her own potential because of her fear of failure. They are all lost, searching for answers and depending on each other in the process.
The most abstract and comical situations usually include Adam (Adam Driver) who plays Hannah’s boyfriend. While his personality is extreme, you can’t help but love him. But many of the incidents really happen to most twenty somethings: Parents cutting you off financially, your first “real” job, experimenting with sexuality, letting go of your first love, competing with your friends, jealousy, envy, supporting your friends (even when they suck), pursuing your dream, being afraid to pursue your dream, ending child-hood friendships, living on your own, learning responsibility, partying…a lot etc.
One of the best parts about this show is that the main character has a real woman body. The average woman in America is a size 14. Not, a size 2 as Hollywood would like you to believe. Real women have curves and probably a few stretch marks and bulges here and there. Our bodies change, it begins in our 20’s and there is a constant evolution through our 30’s, 40’s and beyond. Dunham represents the average woman and is not afraid to show it. There are many human scenes of her nearly naked and not apologizing for it. Yes, Hollywood! Curvy woman are attractive, they have sex, men hit on them and they can be leading ladies!!! As a matter of fact, more women relate to them than the size 2 glamour girl the industry puts on the billboards. Love Lena for remaining true to herself and love HBO for realizing there is an audience that wants to see real women.
