Gabby Douglas Is The First African American Woman To Win GOLD In All-Around Gymnastics!

Go Gabby Go! US gymnast Gabby Douglas earned a place in the history books as she walked away with the gold medal for the women’s individual all-around competition at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Gabby, aka The Flying Squirrel, took the lead after the very first event (the vault)…and NEVER let it go. She finished with a score of 62.232, about three-tenths ahead of Viktoria Komova of Russia. Aliya Mustafina from Russia won the bronze.  Aly Raisman, also TEAM USA, finished in fourth place after tying with Mustafina.  The judges dropped Raisman and Mustafina’s lowest scores and Mustafina was awarded the bronze. I’m still not sure why they couldn’t allow the tie for the bronze and give them both a medal, but rules are rules I guess.

Gabby is now the first African-American woman to win gold in the women’s all-around!  And she’s only 16.  This is also her second Gold Medal as TEAM USA won first place in the Team Finals earlier this week.  So proud of you Gabby!

After winning she said, “Praises go up (to GOD) and blessings come down on me!”   Amen girl!
