Oscar and Grammy Award winning artist, Jennifer Hudson took her acting career to new heights in her recent portrayal of a drug addict and prostitute in George Tilman Jr.’s new film, ‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete.’ The film is produced by Alicia Keys and her co-stars include Jordin Sparks, Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright and newcomer, Skylan Brooks. Jennifer sat down with Cherise Nicole (CNikky) to talk about the difficulties of portraying an addict and how she has been able to overcome the real life tragedy in her own life.
What was the biggest lesson you learned from the addicts in the rehabilitation center you visited?
“Where I went was a rehabilitation center and they specialize in addictions. And one of the things they were taught is that everyone has an addiction. I’m addicted to shopping! We all have something. And that just happened to be there’s. And I learned like from how they got introduced to it, how they fell into it. Things like that, how it changed their lives. How they struggled with it, why! Different things. But most of all I just thought they were so brave. To sit and bare their stories. I’m a complete stranger and for them to tell their stories to me. Ya know, from young girls to people that have been on it for most of their lives and things like that. So, you know it was a huge eye opener.”
When you feel like you can’t go on, how do you persevere?
“Well, I definitely pray, that’s for sure and I always say at the end of the day, none of us. We have no choice but to keep going. You know, so just keep going. We really don’t have a choice. Either that or…you know, we know the alternative to that.”
