Jason Derulo is the pop singer and songwriter famous for hits like, ‘Talk Dirty to me,’ and ‘Wiggle.’ The dynamic performer was in a very public relationship with pop star Jordin Sparks that ended badly earlier this year. So, many may say it was a great career move for him to separate himself from the relationship drama and focus on something brand new. Which happens to be his new job as a judge for season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance. Derulo has been on the show in previous seasons, both as a celebrity guest judge and as a performer. But, this is his first time taking a permanent seat at the judges table and he is joined by long time judge and executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe. And popstar and former American Idol and X Factor judge, Paula Abdul.
We caught up with Derulo during the taping of the Los Angeles auditions at the Orpheum theater. He spoke about his admiration for fellow judge Paula Abdul, living his dreams and why he decided to accept the job as one of the new judges!
How do you feel about becoming a permanent judge on SYTYCD?
“When I came as a guest judge, it was fun, I wasn’t really worried about it. But, coming as a full judge, I was a little reluctant because I didn’t want to be crushing people’s dreams. But, this show is very different. It’s a show that has heart. And each dancer is left with constructive criticism. It’s not a negative show it’s a positive show. So, it’s a soft note like, you need to change this and that and people can come back as stronger dancers. And I think that’s a great part about the show and that’s why I wanted to do it and I’m so glad that I did. I think that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life to sit up there and be blessed with talented beautiful spirit after spirit.”
Did you admire Paula Abdul growing up?
“Paula was a little before my time. I’m 25, so I always looked up to her. She was not the poster on my wall. More like, Beyonce cause that’s like more new school right? But, I’ve always looked to Paula cause she was a great choreographer and a great mind that was able to help so many careers move along.”
