Last night, BET’s positive award show, Black Girls Rock aired and as usual, it was awesome!  Fab Divas Patti LaBelle and Queen Latifah were among the honorees, but the highlight for me was one of my personal She-Roes, Mara Brok Akil!  Mara is the writer and creator of the hit shows, Girlfriends, The Game and Being Mary Jane!  She is also responsible for being a writer and producer for ‘Jumping the Broom’ and ‘Sparkle.’  But, you probably first noticed her writing talents on shows like Moesha and Soul Food.  Her and her fab director husband, Salim Akil run Akil Productions and have not only employed countless amounts of black men and women with dreams of making it in the entertainment industry, but they’ve also written beautiful characters that look, sound and represent real black men and women.  They are a major part of the reason why I started  Love them to pieces! So happy for Mara.

The award show that honors both famous and unknown women of all ages across the country, was taped in New Jersey last weekend.  Kelly Rowland, Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Hudson, Amber Riley and Janelle Monae turned out wonderful performances. And Traci Ellis Ross and Regina King hosted the show together.  BET did a great job once again.

Here is a re-cap according to the ladies of TheYBF:

All of our fave YBF chicks made their way to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Saturday night for the BET taping of Black Girls Rock! Check out all the fabulosity and non-stop gorgeousness that hit the carpet and the stage inside (plus, we’ve got a few spoilers about the show)….

It was a “Girlfriends” reunion on last night’s pink carpet!  Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Tracee Ellis Ross and Golden Brooks looked their usual fab selves as they reunited to present the Shot Caller Award to the show’s creator, Mara Brock Akil.  Mara also gave a tearful and heartfelt speech in acceptance.

When Ms. Patti stopped Mariah from walking off stage and asked her to “hold her award”, MiMi told her about her arm being “a little weak.”  Ms. Patti snapped back and told her to hold that ish anyway.  Hilar!
