Congratulations to Audra McDonald who won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical. This was her fifth Tony, but her first for Leading Actress. The former star of Private Practice was over-come with emotion as she accepted the award. Her daughter had tears in her eyes as her mom thanked her cast and her fiancee’ for convincing her to do the musical. But the most touching moment was when she told her daughter the day she was born was the best day of her life.
Audra was considered the favorite for her powerful portrayal of Bess in “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.” A glimpse of her powerful voice and ability to evoke emotion and it’s no surprise that she won!
Raised in Fresno, Calif., and trained at The Juilliard School, she won three Tony Awards before the age of 30 — for “Carousel,” ”Master Class” and “Ragtime” — and a fourth in 2004 for “A Raisin in the Sun.” She later starred in the made for tv version of “A Raisin in the Sun,” opposite Sean Puffy Combs and Phylicia Rashad.
She has two Grammy Awards, four albums and two Emmy Award nominations. McDonald is also a humanitarian and a fierce advocate for gay marriage rights.
The talented cast which includes David Alan Grier and Phillip Boykin dance and sang their way into the heart of theater goers all over New York. The cast performed at the Tony Awards and gave television audiences all over the world a piece of true art. Werk!
