The 2014 BET Awards were held Sunday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and YES…we were there to witness it all! You can expect EXCLUSIVE interviews with all of the stars coming soon. But, for now, we’ve included a re-cap and highlights of BET’s biggest night of the year! Including red carpet fashion, our favorite performances and the drama between Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azzalea and how Floyd Mayweather was still trying to stir up trouble with T.I. and Tiny!
Chris Rock was an incredible host and he didn’t seem to care about hurting any feelings and making any new friends. He went hard on Rick Ross, at one point saying Rick would be the only male rapper to die from breast cancer and calling him the black Santa Claus. During the show, he even bought Roscoes Chicken and Waffles for many of the guest, but he commented that he bought a salad for Rick. Rick did not attend the awards, but responded on twitter by saying that Chris Rock was washed up. #Shade
Pharell Williams opened the show with a surprise appearance by Missy Elliot who performed ‘Pass That Dutch!”
Chris Brown made his triumphant return to the stage after being in jail. He killed a performance of his hit single, ‘Loyal.’ He even had guest appearances by Lil Wayne (who also performed by himself), Tyga and drummer Travis Barker.
One of the highlights of the evening was when newbie R&B singer August Alsina (who took home 2 awards) was joined on stage by Trey Songz and Chris Brown. The 3 men showed a united front after all of the controversy surrounding August and Trey having major problems with each other. Nice!
Robin Thicke did his usual begging with a new heartfelt song he wrote about his estranged wife Paula Patton. At the end of the performance he even appeared to be crying? Too much maybe??
More SHADE came from the Young Money Camp. Nicki Minaj performed her new song, ‘Pill and Potions.’ Let’s just say the performance with giant mushrooms and bunnies was…interesting.
But, later that evening when she beat out Iggy Azalea in the best female rapper category, she accepted the award and threw major shade at Iggy, saying,
‘My point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. (sips tea) And no, no, No shade. No Shade.”
Apparently, it’s privileged information that Iggy Azalea has a ghost writer that helps her with her rhymes. I guess Nicki would’ve been upset if BET gave Iggy the award for best Female Rap Artist because Nicki writes her own lyrics and Iggy sometimes does not. Nicki ended the speech by saying,
‘Thank You BET and hopefully you will continue to reward authenticity!’
Iggy and Nicki’s beef goes back to 2013, when Iggy insulted Nicki’s performance at the BET Awards on twitter by pointing out that she was lip singing. Nicki responded by basically saying, she was just jealous that she couldn’t perform on the awards like Nicki. The two have apparently not let their ridiculous beef go.
Speaking of Iggy, she performed her and T.I.’s new song, ‘Mediocre’ along with her smash hit, ‘Fancy,’ to a crowd of screaming fans.
Jennifer Hudson performed her new song, ‘Walk It Out,’ she definitely brought out the eye candy.
Lionel Richie was the honoree this year. He performed a slew of his hits along with Ledisi, John Legend and Yolanda Adams (who shut the house down with her performance).
Usher was another highlight of the evening! The king of R&B was back in full effect and he performed a medley of some of his greatest hits. Including: Confessions, You Remind Me, Nice and Slow, Caught Up, You Don’t Have To Call, Love In This Club and Yeah. All before smashing his new song, ‘Kisses.’
But, the most ridiculous performance of the evening came from Beyonce and Jay Z. No, they slated the stage as always, but instead of coming to the awards to perform, they sent in a video for the audience to watch of the performance. And YES, because I was sitting in the audience I can vouch that it was very annoying that BET kept announcing their performance and then they just showed a video. Most of the audience just got up and left!
If you were raised in the 90’s, you loved the resurrection of some of our favorite groups. During a surprise point in the show, Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk, came out to perform their hits, ‘All I Do,’ ‘I Want To Sex You Up,’ and ‘Freak Me Baby!’ Loved It!
While things were going great inside the theater with the hip hop Huxtables, T.I. and Tiny, outside trouble was brewing. You may have heard that T.I. and Tiny’s marriage is on the rocks. Allegedly, T.I. moved out of the couples home a few months ago and has been spotted with other women. And T.I. was recently involved in a fist fight with Floyd Mayweather and his entourage after confronting Mayweather about trying to spend time with his wife Tiny. While Tiny and Mayweather both deny that anything ever happened between the two, T.I. was not happy about her hanging out with Mayweather and his family in Las Vegas.
Well, not that things appear to be on the mend with the couple, Mayweather was on the red carpet, attempting to stir the pot! Tiny walked the carpet alone and when Mayweather spotted her, he called her name and tried to grab her arm. Her publicist quickly swept her away and she purposely avoided him.
Of course TMZ caught the incident on tape….Let’s just hope this doesn’t cause any more of a mess!
Take A Look at a few red carpet looks as well as some performances from the evening!
